Over the last decade, a global community of educators, leaders, and changemakers has come together to grow Breathe for Change into something bigger than a teacher training program.

Together, we have learned, innovated, and explored new ways of teaching and witnessed meaningful, life-changing impact for students and educators alike. Through this work, we have come to believe deeply that educators’ purpose is not only to teach content, but to support students in discovering their full human potential.

As our movement has grown, so has our understanding of what educators, students, and school communities truly need to thrive in today’s world.

We’ve been listening deeply, researching thoroughly, and imagining wholeheartedly as we continue to steward this incredible movement forward.

The time is now: Why we’re evolving

For decades, schools have focused on a narrow definition of intelligence measured by test scores and grades. Educators are required to teach to the test while burning out, and students are struggling with stress, anxiety, depression, disconnection, and the pressure to perform in a world that’s shifting faster than ever.

As technology and AI reshape our future, one question becomes impossible to ignore: How do we truly prepare educators and students to thrive?

Through our work, we’ve come to understand that what both educators and students need to thrive goes far beyond IQ and content knowledge. It requires the development of our full human capacity: our ability to form meaningful relationships, regulate ourselves under pressure, and live with purpose and innovate in a rapidly-changing world.

This realization, and the experiences of the many thousands of educators and students we engage with each year, have compelled us to take Breathe for Change’s work to the next level.

To educate is to develop human beings through Human Intelligence 

At the heart of our evolution is Human Intelligence: the holistic development of the capacities that make us human, as the foundation of education rather than an afterthought.

Human Intelligence integrates how we think, feel, relate, move, and create. When these core human skills are intentionally cultivated, classrooms become more regulated, relational, and meaningful.

Educators feel less reactive and more grounded. Students feel more engaged, capable, and connected.

At a time when AI and technology are advancing faster than ever, Human Intelligence is what unlocks educators’ irreplaceable gifts and helps students learn, grow, and succeed in today’s real world. 

Today, Breathe for Change is a higher education institution researching, developing, and strengthening accredited programs in Human Intelligence to support educators in bringing these essential human skills to life.

Ultimately, we’re working toward a future in which every educator, student, and community thrives.

Our updated look and feel reflects the wellness, community, and inspiration that Breathe for Change has always stood for, while creating space for the expanded ways we now serve educators as a higher education institution leading the movement for Human Intelligence.

Over the past year, our team has been imagining and co-creating an evolved brand that represents who we are today and can serve as a home for this incredible movement for years to come.

Our new logo brings together values that have long guided our work.

You may notice elements of:

  • Butterfly: transformation, renewal, becoming
  • Tree Rings: growth, wisdom, the 5 layers of Human Intelligence

Together, our logo Heart represents education as a process of transformation that we educators bring to life through our passion, connection, and growth.

With our new logo comes a refreshed color palette and visual system. Our colors are inspired by balance and vitality, designed to feel grounded and energizing, calm and alive. They reflect the strength, warmth, creativity, and care that educators bring into their classrooms every day.

A little bolder, a little more expressive, and hopefully, a feeling of stepping into something new while still feeling at home.

  • A design that reflects both warmth and clarity
  • A deeper articulation of Human Intelligence

You may also notice that some content still reflects our previous visual identity. Over time, you’ll see updates across our programs, materials, and experiences as everything comes into alignment.

Co-Founders

Dr. Ilana Nankin, our founder and co-CEO, is an award-winning educator and entrepreneur. Her classroom experience revealed how teacher wellbeing directly impacts student success, inspiring her to earn her PhD in Curriculum and Instruction. Her dissertation research became the foundation of Breathe for Change, a movement supporting the people at the heart of education.

 

In 2015, Ilana partnered with co-founder and co-CEO Michael Fenchel, a social entrepreneur with a passion for wellness, education, and community, to turn her research into action. Today, over 20,000 educators have graduated from Breathe for Change programs, positively impacting more than 20 million students nationwide.
